Bob Doris SNP list MSP for Glasgow has warmly endorsed the "Dare to Care" campaign which has been launched by Community Service Volunteers (CSV) and supported by Barnardos Scotland, Save the Children Scotland, Child Poverty Action Group Scotland, Voluntary Action Fund, Poverty Alliance and BAA Scotland. Bob has also placed a motion in the Scottish Parliament seeking cross party support.
Speaking following the Parliamentary Launch of the Dare to Care campaign Bob said: "I am delighted to add my support to this fine new initiative.
"Child Poverty is not something that happens in another part of the world, it is right here in our own streets.
"One in four of our children live on or below the poverty line and that is a harsh reality.
"Ask anybody what they think of the issue and they'll shake their heads in disgust but the "Dare to Care" campaign provides a framework for everybody to muck in and make a tangible difference.
"They're asking people to devote even a few hours a week to help out Community groups, schools, charities and other organisations that deal with young people.
"Poverty comes in many forms and environmental poverty is one of them.
"Why not help out paint the local centre, or help walk the weans to school, or get involved in parents groups to discuss healthy eating.
"Or you could get the knitting needles out and have a right good gab knitting jumpers for premature babies.
"We are all assailed by good causes asking us for donations and it can be difficult to choose at times. But whilst endemic child poverty is ultimately a problem that Governments have to resolve, we can all help make our communities more children friendly."

S3M-00903 Bob Doris (Glasgow) (SNP): That the Parliament welcomes the launch of CSV Scotlands Dare to Care campaign which asks people to make time to end child poverty; backs its aims of showing how volunteering can make a difference in the fight to end child poverty; encourages organisations to register for this scheme and take advantage of the £50 grant available; urges every MSP to identify a local group and support them to take part in the campaign; recognises not only the valuable contribution that volunteering makes to good causes but also to the personal development of volunteers; notes with deep regret that one in four children still live in poverty, and looks forward to achieving the historic 2020 target to end child poverty in Scotland. |
