Billy McAllister tonight (Thursday) became the latest Scottish National Party Councillor following a stunning victory in the local by-election in Milton, Glasgow.
The SNP candidate came from second place and 20 percentage points behind Labour in 2003 to win this evening with a swing to the party of 15 percent.
The victory is the partyâs first in a by-election in Glasgow in the eight years since 1998, and is the latest in a series of impressive SNP victories at local level across Scotland. Since the 2005 General Election, when the SNP also gained seats, the SNP has now won 6 new seats in council by-elections, more than all the other parties put together. |

When the Labour Party closed St Augustine Secondary and, despite full knowledge of the risks, demolished the buildings without first safely removing deadly asbestos, local people were shocked. To this day unusually high cancer rates have haunted school staff. There are fears that the St Augustine primary may have had asbestos mixed in with the roughcast.
Billy says: 'The full rigour of Health and Safety law must be invoked to ensure that any demolition for a new Primary on the at the St Augustine site is done safely-at whatever the cost. Meantime I am calling on Glasgow City Council to have tests carried out on the roughcast at the School to determine its composition'. |

Labourâs proposals have a âmade in Englandâ label on them. The Scottish Parliament has no say over the level of our benefits, or who is entitled to them. All these decisions are taken in London. Scotland can only decide on such matters once our country is Independent. |

The SNP believes that anyone fit to work should be actively seeking
employment, although it helps if there are actually real jobs to apply
for. We want to create decent jobs and bring investment into Glasgow

Scotland has one of the worst health records in Europe. Yet Labour in recent years have been more concerned with trying to sell off our parks to big business developers than encouraging our youth to get more active.
Whilst visiting the St Augustine's site Nicola Sturgeon MSP said - "Billy deserves enormous credit in the way he defended the St Augustine's site a few years back. Now Billy's latest proposals will not only protect the area for future generations but also deliver a gold standard, state of the art leisure facility at St Augustine's for the whole community." |

âI was already aware of many of the problems faced by the residents of Milton ward. When I asked my SNP campaign team to deliver surveys to every resident I could have predicted the issues that were raised by you. What I could not have predicted was the massive response - surveys returned in their thousands - or the full extent of the problems residents are facing right across the area. |

In 1998, the popular St Augustineâs Secondary School was closed by Labour councillors. Since then, Milton kids have had to be bussed to school across territorial lines. Their education suffered as a result. The reason for the school closure was to allow the huge school and playing field site to be sold off to developers. Expensive private housing was to be built and fenced off from the rest of Milton. |

JOE KERR is a well known face in the Milton area. He and his family are Milton born and bred, and Joe has been involved as a community activist for as long as he can remember.
It was working for the community that led him to join Maryhill SNP, and he had hoped to represent the people of Milton ward as an SNP councillor.
Joe says: âI am sorry that health and family circumstances mean I am unable to be your candidate in this election. But I have no hesitation in endorsing Billy â and urging everyone to vote for him.
