Speaking at a press conference in Glasgow following the result of the Glasgow North East by-election SNP Depute Leader and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “The SNP campaign did achieve our best Westminster result in Glasgow North East for 35 years, and David Kerr’s positive campaign made progress in Labour’s safest seat in Scotland.  But we were clearly disappointed by the result, and one early lesson from this by-election is clear.

Commenting on the result of the Glasgow North East by-election, Scottish National Party leader and First Minister Alex Salmond said: "David Kerr achieved progress in what is the Labour Party’s safest seat in Scotland – despite a relentlessly negative Labour campaign.  He did chalk up the SNP’s best Westminster share of the vote in this constituency for 35 years.

"Of course we are disappointed not to do better, and will reflect carefully on the result and the lessons to be learned.

Labour campaign collapses under Labour deception

On the eve of the Glasgow North East by-election, the SNP urged voters to tell Labour they will not be taken for granted anymore, contrasting SNP's positive campaign with the negativity and distortion of Labour. As the election battle for Glasgow North East enters the final day of campaigning, SNP candidate David Kerr will embark on an eve of poll push to meet 1,000 voters.

The constituency has been without an MP for a record 145 days, and the SNP will use the final day of campaigning to close the gap on Labour and end 74 years of Labour neglect.

The London Labour Government which is spending £12 billion on the Olympic Games, including Scottish lottery money, has refused to pay up £300 milllion in Barnett consequential that should come to Scotland and to Glasgow from the money being spent to regenerate the East End of London.

Labour's by-election campaign hit the buffers today as it was revealed the UK Labour Government is to axe a vital train link between Glasgow and London.

SNP Candidate David Kerr this morning took part in a fun run with local residents, SNP activists and athletes  from Glasgow's international community as the by-election enters it's final lap.

Speaking before the start of the run from Springburn to the Wallace Monument at Robroyston Mr Kerr said: "As this by-election enters its final lap, the SNP campaign continues to close the gap on Labour.  More and more people are sick of being let down by Labour, they want to see a fresh start for Glasgow North East with an SNP MP.

The SNP today highlighted investment in education and skills as part of a package of measures in place to help the people of Glasgow North East through Labour's recession with a visit to a local college.

Under the SNP, John Wheatley College has seen funding increase to create extra students places during the economic downturn and to support work with schools to keep young people in education.
