Alyn Smith MEP
Elected to the European Parliament in 2004 for the Scottish National Party Alyn is Scotland’s youngest MEP. He is also SNP Spokesman on Europe, a member of the SNP Cabinet and the party’s National Executive Committee.
Born in Glasgow in 1973, Alyn grew up in Scotland and Saudi Arabia, returning to Scotland in 1986. He attended Leeds University and spent an Erasmus year studying at Heidelberg in Germany. He graduated from Nottingham Law School in 1996. Alyn also gained a Masters degree in European Studies from the College of Europe in Warsaw. After a spell working with Scotland Europa in Brussels, Alyn moved to London where he qualified as a lawyer with commercial law firm Clifford Chance. In 2000 Alyn moved back to Edinburgh working first for a legal firm and from 2002 for the SNP in the Scottish Parliament as an adviser on European, Justice and Business policies.

The ScottishPower takeover by Spanish firm Iberdrola is to be investigated by the European Commission following SNP action to raise issues relating to the abuse of state aid rules by the Spanish Government. Neelie Kroes, the European Competition Commissioner has now stated in a letter to the SNP that there are aspects of Spain's tax laws that need to be considered by the EU.
Neither the Scottish Executive nor the UK Government have raised the issue at EU level. |
