The Scottish Parliament deals with much of the legislative and policy issues affecting Scottish life, including health, education, local government, housing, law, economic and industrial development and the environment. But many matters have been reserved to the Westminster Parliament, such as social security, taxation, foreign policy and defence. While it can be said that the parliament has been of great benefit to the Scottish people so far, the restrictions on its powers have hampered the progress of Scottish democracy. Only with an Independent Scottish Parliament can we have control over our own affairs and provide properly for our own people.
