Local news from Glasgow constituency campaigns for the Westminster General Election on 5th May 2005.
These elections are being fought on new constituency boundaries, as Scotland's representation at Westminster is being reduced from 72 to 59 MPs, as per the 1998 Scotland Act. Glasgow therefore now has seven Westminster constituencies. See the individual constituency pages for details of the candidates and local campaign news.

James Dornan
Glasgow South West comprises parts of three former constituencies on the
South Side of Glasgow; Glasgow Cathcart, Glasgow Govan, and
Glasgow Pollock.

| James Dornan is born and bred in the South Side of Glasgow,
and works as a Parliamentary Assistant to Stewart Maxwell MSP.
James has been in the SNP for around a decade, and is the Organiser
and Vice Convenor of Govan Riverside Branch. He stood for the
Party at Ayr Constituency in 2003.
James has two sons and two grandchildren. |

| Finlay MacLean is a former Convener of Rutherglen CA and a former
SNP Councillor in East Ayrshire.
Finlay was brought up in Cardonald and educated at Bellahouston
Academy.
He has experience working in accounts and office management,
teaching and running his own retail business.
Finlay is married with a son and daughter. Outide politics,
he enjoys hillwalking and gardening.

Glasgow
Central Westminster Constituency contains wards from five different
Glasgow seats. There are three wards from the old Glasgow Kelvin, two
from the old Glasgow Shettleston, two from the old Glasgow Govan, one
shared between the old Glasgow Govan and Glasgow Shettleston, and one
shared between the old Glasgow Rutherglen and Glasgow Shettleston.

Kidd is 48 and lives in Partick. He is a trade unionist and is
Organiser of the SNP Trade Union Group. He works as a Parliamentary
Assistant to Sandra White MSP.
Bill says: "I believe that every
citizen of Scotland should be treated equally. Pensioners shouldn't
have to worry about means-testing; Hospitals should be well-staffed,
clean and as local as possible; Tax should reflect the ability to pay;
War should always be the last resort, never the first.
"Therefore I
believe that Scotland must be a normal INDEPENDENT country, and voting
SNP at every election is the only way to achieve that." |

This constituency consists of the whole of the old Glasgow
Ballieston constituency with the addition of four wards from Glasgow
Shettleston.

| Lachie is a long standing SNP supporter and Convenor of Baillieston
Constituency Branch.
He is firmly committed to Glasgow, as he was was born in the
city Glasgow in 1952, educated at Glasgow Academy and took his
law degree at Glasgow University.
Admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in June 2000, Lachie is
married with two daughters and two grandsons, and is a committed
Church of Scotland elder.

John McLaughlin
Glasgow North East is made up of the whole of Glasgow Springburn
Constituency and three wards from Maryhill. The people of
Glasgow North East are currently not represented in Westminster
as the Speaker holds this seat.

John McLaughlin has been in the SNP since the 1960s. He has
been a long time champion of the interests of the people of
Glasgow, both as one of the first SNP councillors in Glasgow
and a former member of Executive Council of the NHS for Glasgow.
John is currently the Speaker of the Glasgow Parliamentary
Debating Association and was recently elected Secretary of the
Glasgow North and East Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Outside of politics, John enjoys reading, good food, good wine,
and good company. |

Kenny McLean
Glasgow North is comprised of parts of the Kelvin, Anniesland
and Maryhill.

Kenny was born in Paisley in 1960 and attended school at
Hyndland Secondary, and graduated with an Honours degree in
Politics and History from Glasgow University, where he is currently
studying for a Masters in Urban Policy. He lives in Partick.
Kenny is convener of Glasgow Kelvin Constituency Association
SNP and Secretary of Glasgow West End Branch SNP, and is a former
Convenor of the Federation of Student Nationalists.
Outside politics, Kenny enjoys listening to music (particularly
the Ramones and the Smiths) and is vice-chairman of Partick
Community Council. |

At 27, Graeme Hendry is the youngest SNP candidate standing
in Glasgow. A resident of Partick, Graeme joined the party in
1997 and has held a number of positions at branch level and
twice been a candidate in Glasgow local by-elections
Graeme is a Careers Advisor with Careers Scotland in Clydebank
and holids a PG Dip in Careers Guidance from Strathclyde University.
Graeme is married and enjoys watching football and playing
badminton and golf. He is a member of Unison. |
