Sturgeon visit launches SNP campaign to win Glasgow North
Saturday, 06 March 2010

Patrick Grady with Bob Doris and Nicola SturgeonPatrick Grady, SNP Candidate for Glasgow North, welcomed Scotland’s Deputy First Minister, SNP Depute Leader and MSP for Govan Nicola Sturgeon to Summerston on Saturday 27th February, to launch the party’s campaign to win Glasgow North at the Westminster election.

Nicola Sturgeon, Patrick Grady and local SNP MSP Bob Doris spent time chatting to shoppers at the ASDA supermarket before meeting voters on the doorsteps in Broughton Road and the surrounding area. Local residents were happy to spend time talking about the forthcoming election, with many residents also congratulating Nicola Sturgeon on her recent engagement.

In last year’s European elections, the SNP topped the poll within the Glasgow North boundaries, and the seat, currently held by Labour, has looked vulnerable to an SNP challenge since the 2007 elections when the SNP placed a strong second in both Kelvin and Maryhill Scottish Parliament constituencies.

Commenting, Nicola Sturgeon MSP said:

“I was very happy to spend some time in Summerston supporting Patrick’s campaign to win Glasgow North for the SNP.

“The SNP team in the area has been campaigning hard to save local schools and community centres from city council cuts.

“Glasgow needs more local champions like Patrick who can work hard for the city and represent the interests of local people at Westminster.

Patrick Grady, SNP Candidate for Glasgow North, added:

“People in Glasgow North deserve a Member of Parliament who will work hard for their interests and put trust back at the heart of politics.

“It was great to be joined by Nicola Sturgeon to launch our campaign, and the response on the doorsteps was really positive.

“The Labour party in Glasgow have let local people down and taken them for granted for too long. With hard working councillors, MSPs – and MP John Mason – across the city, people know that the SNP will put local interests first, last and always.

Bob Doris, SNP MSP for Glasgow, said:

“Voters in Summerston know that the SNP is working hard for them during difficult economic times, and in the face of community centre closures by the Labour Council.

“The SNP have an excellent chance of winning at Westminster in Glasgow North – unlike the Liberal Democrats who came fourth in the area last year, and lost their deposit in both recent Glasgow by-elections.

“Patrick would be a great addition to the SNP team in Glasgow North and I know he’s got what it takes to win at Westminster.
