SNP Kicks off North Glasgow election campaign at Firhill
Monday, 12 April 2010

Patrick Grady, Bob Doris MSP and Cllr Billy McAllister SNP activists gathered at the Partick Thistle grounds in Maryhill on Saturday (10 April) to launch their campaign for SNP victories in the north of Glasgow. Local candidate, Patrick Grady, whose constituency of Glasgow North saw the SNP beating Labour for the first time at last year’s European elections, was joined by fellow candidate Billy McAllister and Glasgow MSP Bob Doris.

The Partick Thistle v. Dundee First Division encounter was the perfect opportunity for the candidates to talk face to face with voters before the kick-off. Local party activists are optimistic about Mr Grady’s campaign following the 2009 Euro poll and with the polls showing a freefall drop in support for the Lib Dems since 2005 the pundits will be keeping a close eye on the Glasgow North SNP campaign.

Mr Grady said: "People are not turned off by politics but rather by the same old politicians. The SNP offers Glasgow a new approach. We will stand up against all the UK parties who are targeting Scotland's budget as an easy hit to solve Labour's mismanagement of our economy.

"In Glasgow North it is only the SNP who can beat Labour and fight the UK cuts. Whoever wins the League this season, the fans I spoke to are wanting local champions at Westminster to stand up for Glasgow."

Speaking outside the Firhill stadium, Cllr Billy McAllister and SNP candidate for Glasgow North East said: "The supporters turning up for today's match are here to enjoy a game of football but we got a really positive response as they were heading into the ground. Many of the people I spoke to are scunnered by what they see as sleaze and corruption from the big UK parties. The SNP offer something different.

"Over the years I have championed the interests of the people of north Glasgow and stood up against organised crime in our communities. I’m ready now to take the fight directly to Westminster."

Bob Doris SNP MSP for Glasgow added: "Whilst the UK parties are flying overhead in chartered aircraft, these local candidates are on the ground talking face to face with voters. Billy McAllister and Patrick Grady are real local champions for Glasgow. Voters are sick of the same old, tired and discredited UK politicians.

"I think as the day draws nearer, Glasgow is getting more and more ready to send SNP local champions to Westminster to fight their corner. John Mason has made a real difference in the East-End since the by election in 2008 and people here are talking about it."
