John Mason is originally from Rutherglen, is 51, an accountant, and has lived in the East End for 18 years.
After training in Glasgow, he has worked for housing associations, nursing homes, and with a charity in London. He also spent 3 years in Nepal with an NGO representing churches from all over the world.
He was elected as the Councillor for the Garrowhill ward in 1998 at a by-election and held the seat in 1999 and 2003. He has led the SNP Group on the Council since 1999 and was elected in 2007 as Councillor for the new ward of Baillieston. He achieved the highest personal vote of any Councillor in Glasgow.
He was elected as MP for Glasgow East following a stunning by-election victory in July 2008.
His other interests include involvement in Easterhouse Baptist Church, hill-walking and camping. |

The SNP today demanded to know "where's the money" over Labour's troubled fundraising dinner earlier this year, attended by Gordon Brown, which preceded the resignation of Labour's brightest star and Glasgow council leader Steven Purcell.
The call follows publication today of donations and borrowing received by political parties during Quarter 1, 2010 (January-March) by the Electoral Commission.

Voters in Glasgow East have been given the opportunity to put their questions directly to Alex Salmond at a special community event, hosted by Elaine C Smith.
The final Ask Alex event of the campaign came at the end of the SNP Leader's whistle stop tour of key seats across Scotland which today saw him campaign in Linlithgow, Falkirk and Glasgow East.
The event, at "The Bridge" on Westerhouse Road, was a chance for voters to quiz the First Minster directly on the issues that matter to them.

John Mason, SNP candidate for Glasgow East, has warmly welcomed today's announcement by the Scottish Goverment of an investment of £2.8 million to support a major redevelopment of Dalmarnock station in Glasgow's East End.
Finance Secretary John Swinney announced the allocation of European funding, which will transform Dalmarnock station into a key transport hub in time for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

SNP Depute Leader Nicola Sturgeon will today highlight the SNP's pledges of jobs and growth, to scrap trident, to protect local services, to deliver a higher pension for our elderly and to guarantee the concessionary bus travel scheme as they board a bus in Glasgow East.
The SNP are now the only party in a position to protect Scotland from Labour, Tory and Lib Dem attacks on Scotland's services.

SNP Work and Pensions Spokesman and Westminster candidate for Glasgow East, John Mason, has hit out at an 'inadequate and unfair' settlement for the thousands of victims of the Farepak collapse and slammed the Labour Government for its repeated failure to step in to ensure compensation for the victims.
Following a meeting between former directors of the Christmas savings club and the joint liquidators, Farepak families are set to receive just 15p for every pound invested.

The SNP today called on Labour to withdraw all leaflets claiming that bus passes will be cut.
In fact the SNP has guaranteed the bus pass and is extending it to include disabled veterans.
The leaflets were exposed in the Leaders Debate last night when Brown denied Labour were issuing such claims.

SNP Work and Pensions spokesperson and candidate for Glasgow East, John Mason, has warned that Labour's dismal decade of cuts may have already begun after it emerged the UK Government have slashed support for diasbled people in Scotland.
The Independent Living Fund offers additional financial assistance to people already in receipt of support from social services to provide them with sufficient funds to access essential support. Under proposed changes to the eligibility criteria, the number of people in Scotland eligible for the benefit will plummet.
