SNP begin Glasgow Central campaign with cuts warning
Friday, 09 April 2010

OsamaSaeedThe SNP highlighted the impact of Labour cuts in Glasgow over recent years on the first full day of campaigning after the 6 May election was called, warning that Labour were promising worse in years to come.

The party’s candidate in Glasgow Central, Osama Saeed, was joined by SNP depute leader Nicola Sturgeon in Govanhill, which has seen the local baths, a post office and a school closed by Labour in the recent past.

Osama Saeed commented: “Govanhill knows what Labour cuts mean on the ground. This area has lost a pool, a school and a post office because of them.

“That was during times of plenty, and now Labour are promising that their cuts will be ‘deeper and tougher’ than those of Margaret Thatcher. The mind boggles at how this will further decimate communities like this one.

“There are serious housing issues in this area. In 2008 [Labour council leader] Steven Purcell said the buck stopped with him. He has now gone, the situation has not improved, and will only get worse if Labour have their way.

“It is imperative that all the communities of Govanhill unite to get the extra resources that are needed. There is a cosy consensus of complacency between the Labour council, Labour MSP and Labour MP for the area. I will get in amongst this if elected.

“Labour has shown through its previous and proposed cuts that they have no respect for communities in Glasgow, and so the people of Glasgow can show they have no respect for Labour on 6 May."
