The SNP have seized on an opinion poll showing massive opposition to the Labour government wasting cash on a new generation of nuclear weapons, and have called on the UK government to focus cuts on ‘white elephant’ projects like Trident and ID cards - and rule out real terms cuts by the Labour government in Scottish spending.
The ComRes poll for The Independent showed that the public overwhelmingly wants the government to scrap the Trident nuclear missile system and believes spending on health and education should be protected and rise each year.

SNP Westminster candidate Osama Saeed has demanded an immediate apology from Mohammad Sarwar MP after he voted AGAINST a package of compensation for people who lost out after the UK Government 10p tax rate fiasco.
Official figures show 500,000 hard working Scottish households would lose out as a consequence of the move contained in the 2007 Budget – Gordon Brown’s last as Chancellor. The UK Government eventually bowed to pressure by the opposition parties – including the SNP – and backtracked on their decision and reinstated the lower tax band but many Scottish families lost out in the meantime as their tax bill rocketed.
Demands for the UK Government to provide compensation to all those who lost out in the House of Commons this week were defeated when Labour MPs, including Mr Sarwar voted against it.

Glasgow Central MP Mohammad Sarwar has come under fire for his response to the expenses controversy engulfing Westminster.
The Labour MP, who was fifth most expensive in the House of Commons last year, broke his silence on the matter by reacting to a statement from SNP Westminster candidate Osama Saeed, replying that he would publish his expense claims on his website at a later date.
However, questions have arisen on why there should be a delay on this when the House of Commons authorities gave MPs a copy of all claims in April, with some MPs already having placed the documents on their websites. Sarwar also did not comment on the legitimacy or otherwise of his expenses.
