Meikle in a muddle over Tory list allegations
The Scottish Conservatives today received another blow to their disastrous election campaign, on the day they attempt to launch their campaign ahead of Scotland’s election in May.
David Meikle, who was ranked number six on the Conservative’s regional list for Glasgow resigned after row erupted within the party with allegations of “electoral malpractice” plaguing the internal election contest.
Commenting, Glasgow candidate Sid Khan said: “This is yet another resignation from Tory candidates and we’re under a week into the election campaign. I expected their supporters to see sense and ditch them in May but I certainly didn’t expect so many of their candidates to be jumping ship so soon. It is just as well it is close of nominations tomorrow - otherwise they would have no candidates left!
“What is of most surprise is Annabelle Goldie’s lack of leadership. She had been told and was fully aware of the concerns of members of her own party but completely failed to address any of them. As a result, the Tories have had another disastrous start to a campaign.
“It’s clear that they are in disarray from top to bottom. Alongside these allegations of malpractice, the Tories have been plagued with internal disputes across the country – they’ve already lost candidates in Buchan Coast, East Kilbride, Falkirk East – and now Glasgow.
“People in Glasgow, and indeed the rest of Scotland, have a straight choice in this election between an SNP Government with a proven record of delivery and an untested Labour party devoid of any direction or vision for the people of Scotland.”
