Sandra White, the Scottish National Party candidate for Glasgow Kelvin has welcomed the comments of Archbishop Keith O' Brien writing in the Scotsman today (Thur 5th April). Cardinal O'Brien said "We do not need weapons of mass destruction...we need to feed those who are starving in our world of plenty"
Commenting Ms White said:
"Yet again, the comments from Cardinal O' Brien on this issue are welcome"
"He is doing no more than echoing the opinion of the overwhelming majority in our country but it cannot be said often enough. He, the churches, the Trade Unions, the SNP, the Greens, The Lib Dems, Solidarity and the Scottish Socialist Party all condemn the Labour governments desire to replace Trident at a cost of nearly £100billion. Add to that the hundreds of thousands of men, women and children and the cry is very clear - Not in our name"
"It is criminal that the London Government want to spend so much when there is such abject poverty around us"
"The vote in the house of Commons was only won when the Tories supported the Government despite the rebellion of some principled members"
"I am heartily sick of politicians in Glasgow who say they are opposed to Trident yet, when they have a chance to vote on the issue, they vote FOR it or abstain"
"This is not the representation that the people require and I hope it's remembered on polling day"
Note:
Cardinal Keith OBrien has written in todays Scotsman:
The call to Make Poverty History has gone out, but it has not yet been answered. Two days ago, the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) issued figures showing that its members' aid budgets actually fell by 5 per cent last year. The UK government deserves recognition for its 13 per cent increase, but it still falls short of the target to which we agreed 37 years ago, namely to spend 0.7 per cent of our gross national income on aid. And while continuing to miss its international aid and development commitments, the British Government has just agreed to renew the Trident missile system at the cost of at least £25 billion. I and my fellow bishops have spoken out consistently against the replacement of the Trident system.
We do not need weapons of mass destruction. We need to feed those who are starving in our world of plenty - with food, with opportunities, and with hope for the future.
