Sandra White, SNP MSP for Glasgow is urging people from all over Scotland to help Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to win a prestigious Art prize. Following the recent refurbishment (Called The Kelvingrove New Century Project), The Gallery has been put on the list to win the Gulbenkian prize for the museum which has completed the most worthy innovation in the last year. A shortlist of four museums will be announced in early April 2007 with the winner being announced on Thursday May 24 at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London during Museum and Galleries Month 2007. The winner will receive a £100,000 prize.
Ms White said:
Just about everybody I know has commented on the magnificent new refurbishment of the art galleries. Since they reopened more than 2 million people have paid a visit and now the upgrade has put Kelvingrove on the list for this great prize
Like many other people, I regard the place as an old friend and I hope we can get some momentum going that might help them cross the winning line. It is a source of pride in Glasgow that cultural institutions such as these are free to enter and Im sure the first prize will be more than handy.
Kelvingrove is in Glasgow but it is of course a national treasure. Thats why Ive placed a motion in the Scottish Parliament asking for the whole of Scotland to lend their support
The 24hourmuseum website are great supporters of the Gulbenkian prize and, whilst the vote itself doesnt determine the winner, they have promised to pass on the results of the poll before the judges decide.
So come on Glasgow and Scotland, get voting for an old, beloved friend. Lets make sure we get on to the shortlist

The full text of Sandras motion is: "That this Parliament applauds Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow for being long listed for Britains biggest arts prize, the prestigious Gulbenkian Prize for Museums and Galleries; notes that the first prize of £100,000 will go to the museum or gallery judged to have completed the most worthy innovation in the last year; suggests that the Kelvingrove New Century Project, whereby the building and displays were brought up to 21st Century standards, the number of objects on display was increased by 50% and thousands of square metres of new display space was created, is a worthy winner; further notes that since reopening on 11 July 2006, there have been over two million visitors, making it one of the most popular attractions in the UK: and urges all Scots to make their preference heard by voting for this national treasure through the 24hour museum website at http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/nwh_gfx_en/ART43489.html
