Alyn Smith MEP

Elected to the European Parliament in 2004 for the Scottish National Party Alyn is Scotland's youngest MEP. He is also SNP Spokesman on Europe, a member of the SNP Cabinet and the party's National Executive Committee.
Born in Glasgow in 1973, Alyn grew up in Scotland and Saudi Arabia, returning to Scotland in 1986. He attended Leeds University and spent an Erasmus year studying at Heidelberg in Germany. He graduated from Nottingham Law School in 1996. Alyn also gained a Masters degree in European Studies from the College of Europe in Warsaw. After a spell working with Scotland Europa in Brussels, Alyn moved to London where he qualified as a lawyer with commercial law firm Clifford Chance. In 2000 Alyn moved back to Edinburgh working first for a legal firm and from 2002 for the SNP in the Scottish Parliament as an adviser on European, Justice and Business policies.

Olympic chiefs bow to fan pressure - Saltire to fly over Hampden
Scotland's national flag will now be allowed to fly over Hampden Park during this summer's Olympic Games, it was revealed today.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games [LOCOG] climbed down and finally announced that the Saltire will be allowed to keep its normal pride of place above the country's national stadium when eight Olympics football matches are held there this summer.
The move follows a national campaign of protest sparked off last weekend when Scottish Euro MP Alyn Smith discovered the ban and wrote to London Olympics supremo Lord Coe insisting it be overturned. Since then, nearly 1300 people have backed him by signing an online petition demanding a u-turn.
