Glasgow SNP MSP Sandra White today welcomed Cllr Steven Purcells support for her proposal to save Glasgows post offices by offering council support.
Ms White wrote to Steven Purcell on 10th March urging him to look at following the example of Essex Council in supporting post offices threatened with closure.
"I am pleased to see Steven Purcell has taken up my suggestion that the Council look at supporting post offices threatened with closure.
"Its about time someone in Labour showed some support for the Post Offices and the communities they support.
"I hope he is able to have more success with his colleagues in the Labour party at Westminster than people across Glasgow have had.
"Glasgows Labour MPs have behaved disgracefully on this issue. Not one of them voted to stop post office closures."
Note:
Sandra White's letter to Steven Purcell:
Dear Steven
I am writing in relation to Post Office closures in Glasgow and the recent announcement by Essex County Council to explore the possibility of the Local Authority taking over the running of Post Offices threatened by closures.
As you will know the Post Office are obliged to seriously consider any such proposals which they receive and put into effect a three month moratorium on any post office threatened by closure.
I am aware that in the Councils response to the consultation process you stated that you were opposed to any closures in the Glasgow area.
Therefore I would like to enquire as to whether you plan to follow Essex County councils lead and make representations to the Post Office with a view to taking control of Post Offices which were threatened with closure.
Sandra White MSP
Response from Steven Purcell, 13th March 2008
"I am looking into the suggestions that you have made and will write to you again with my views in early course." |
