White condemns downgrading of city's nurseries |

Sandra
White MSP today condemned Glasgow City Councils proposals to downgrade
Glasgow's nursery provision by replacing professionally qualified
teaching staff with a cheaper option. Under the Council's proposals,
which have been shrouded in a veil of secrecy, some of the most
professionally qualified of the City's early years specialists will go
and their invaluable expertise in early identification of learning and
behavioural problems will be lost.
Mrs White said, "I am shocked that when we are talking about aiming for
50% of Scotland's young people attending higher education, Glasgow is
intent on cutting back the bedrock on which the whole system is based.
Nursery school teachers not only have a full teaching qualification
they then have to take specialist early years training before going on
to nurture our youngest children. These are dedicated professionals and
it would be the most retrograde step to lose them and downgrade our
nurseries.
"I think this is cost-cutting gone mad. Many of those who depend on
state nursery education will lose out as those who can afford to go
private take their children out of what will become a second-class
system."
