Tenants in Carntyne, Glasgow, learned today that after twenty years of campaigning to have their houses repaired and saved from demolition there calls have finally been answered.

Housing chiefs have, after much pressure, agreed to start structural work on over 600 houses, at a cost of 38 million pounds, to ensure that they are fit to live in after the houses had been announced as defective due to the use of  cheap reinforced concrete in the building which had led to the support columns crumbling away. 

The work which will begin in February has delighted the residents who have so long to have their case heard; although many have also questioned why it has taken so long for Glasgow Housing Association to take this welcome step. Glasgow Housing Association has also promised to use local workers wherever possible and that the use of apprentices will be integral to the project.

Sandra White, SNP MSP for the Glasgow Region, who has worked alongside local organisations and the local community for a number of years to see the houses repaired welcomed the announcement saying: "I've been proud to support the local community in their hard fought battle and my congratulations goes out to them for their tireless never say die attitude which has finally been won.

"They have had to put up with years of uncertainty and face many obstacles but today's result is testimony to their commitment and widespread support within the local community.

"The GHA have taken a step in the right direction and I hope that it's the first of many, which will put residents and local communities at the heart of any decisions affecting their future."
