With turnout in the recent Scottish Parliament elections reaching an all time low (49%) initiatives which aim to overturn this worrying situation are quite simply a breath of fresh air.
Outside The Box are one organisation which are doing just that. Their aim is to encourage people with learning difficulties and autism to see the elections as a good thing and to help explain how to vote and keep in touch with their MSP.
Following on from the sterling work done by Capability Scotland at the last elections in increasing the participation of disabled people Outside The Box hopes to repeat that success for a section of society which has faced similar barriers.
Sandra White MSP, the SNP's spokesperson for Equalities, has today tabled a motion congratulating Outside the Box.
"I have long been a campaigner for equality for everyone and think that initiatives like this one are great for those people who otherwise wouldn't know where to start, well done Outside The Box and I wish you every success"
Sandra adds that she hopes more people will turn out to vote on the day.
"We need people to come out and vote for the changes they want to see. I really believe that if more people vote then the future Scottish Parliament will reflect their needs and aspirations better helping people to know we are working for them"
Note: the following is the text of Sandra's motion
S2M-5754 Ms Sandra White (Glasgow) (SNP): Thinking Outside the Box.
hat the Parliament extends its full support to Outside the Box for its campaign to encourage people with learning difficulties and people with autism to take part in the Scottish elections; congratulates it on being awarded a grant from the Electoral Commission to produce a resource pack to achieve this, and believes that for too long many people have been left out of the electoral process and that every effort should be made to help everyone in society to have their voice heard in order to make the future Scottish Parliament as representative of its people and their needs as possible.
