Seasonal cheer - end child poverty
Monday, 20 November 2006

Sandra White has today called on the Scottish Parliament to put the needs of Scotland's poorest children to the top of their Christmas list.

Sandra said, "Urgent action needs to be taken and I add my full support to Save the Children's campaign to end child poverty that's being launched today. We should all get behind this campaign and help make a difference to these poor children whose families can't afford a decent Christmas."

One of the central planks of Save the Children's campaign is the Child Seasonal Grants, for the poorest families, at the most expensive times of the year- especially during the winter.

"It is shocking that over three million kids in Britain are living in poverty, that's one in every four kids whose parents have to choose between a new jacket or food, paying a bill or buying a present. In today's society it's unacceptable that so many children are in this horrifying position. I've got three children and know only too well the pressures parents are under at this time of year and my heart goes out to these parents and children," Sandra added.

The campaign also comes at a time when people are beginning to feel the pinch from their bills and the weather. Last week Scottish Power was at the centre of the storm, when they posted an incredible 77% rise in profits, while customers have seen their bills shoot through the roof further adding to the poorest families' worries as more and more go into fuel poverty.
