Sandra White, SNP MSP for Glasgow has welcomed the news from tourism agency visitscotland.com that online bookings for Glasgow and the Clyde Valley in the first four months of 2006 were up significantly on last year's figures.
Sandra said: "This is great news indeed. Increasingly, holidaymakers are travelling independently and making more decisions for themselves about how to spend their holidays. For more and more people, that means not just taking advantage of cheap flights, but arranging their own accommodation as well. The internet has become the easiest way to find out what a place has to offer, and those businesses which can allow you to book online are clearly going to have a head start.
Tourism is Scotland's most important industry with £4.5 billion being pumped into the Scottish economy annually. We have so much to offer and with an upsurge in other markets like Ancestral tourism which encourages tourists to visit more than once, the future looks good"
NOTE:
- Online bookings for Glasgow and the Clyde Valley have increased by 109%. Booking revenues have also jumped by 106% for the same period.
- visitscotland.com also reported an increase in the number of online bookings taken across Scotland, with an overall increase of 76%.
- The statistics quoted compare consumer bookings made through the online accommodation search and booking facilities on the www.visitscotland.com website in the period 01 January to 30 April 2006 versus the equivalent period last year (01 January to 30 April 2005).
