Sandra backs publicans in challenge on glass ban
Friday, 09 June 2006
whisky glassSandra White, SNP MSP for Glasgow says that any proposed ban on the use of Glasses in Glasgow pubs would be a step too far. Last December the Glasgow Licensing Board agreed a policy which will effectively ban the use of glass receptacles in Glasgow's pubs and clubs. The Licensing Board acted because of what they saw as an epidemic of glass assaults.  The Scottish Beer and Pub Association moved a petition on the 31st May seeking a judicial review of that decision.

Sandra said: "I honestly think that this is just a step too far.  The intentions of the Licensing Board are clear and well meaning however we are in danger of regulating ourselves to death.

"Like every other city we have to address the problem of violence but not every problem can be resolved by passing laws.  Why should the overwhelming majority of Glaswegians have their rights restricted because of the moronic actions of a few? Are we to ban knives and forks next?

"Glasgows tourist experience has improved recently and we have ambitions to be a top European destination.  And yet through this legislation we are diminishing the possibilities of achieving that.  It sends out the wrong message to tourists and locals alike.  We are basically saying that our people can't be trusted and they're taking their life in their hands visiting our City.  This is obviously wrong and needs to be seriously thought through.

"There are also cost implications for local businesses which have to be taken into account.

"I repeat that yes, we need to deal with the thugs, but I would argue that the blanket ban is an extreme measure and we should approach it on a premise by premise basis."
