Sandra White MSP calls on people in Glasgow to Break the Sound Barrier
Monday, 08 May 2006
During Deaf Awareness Week (1st - 7th May), Sandra White MSP for Glasgow, took part in Britain's Biggest Sound Check, joining more than 14,400 people in Scotland who have already called RNID's telephone hearing check. Sandra voiced her support for RNID's Breaking the Sound Barrier campaign, which is reaching out to the 4 million people in the UK1 who are losing their hearing but doing nothing about it.

The specially developed five minute telephone hearing check, available by dialling 0845 600 5555, is part of the Breaking the Sound Barrier campaign by RNID, the national charity representing the 758,000 deaf and hard of hearing people in Scotland.

MSP joins RNID Scotland Campaigns Co-ordinator, Doug BradleyExpressing her support for the campaign, which aims to change attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids, Sandra says: "

RNID Scotland Campaigns Co-ordinator, Doug Bradley explains: "It is wonderful that Sandra MSP took part in Britain's Biggest Sound Check and is supporting RNID's Breaking the Sound Barrier campaign. With more than 40 per cent of the over 50s experiencing some level of hearing loss, it has come as no surprise that RNID's telephone hearing check is proving so popular.

"RNID Scotland wants to reach out to people who could benefit from wearing a hearing aid, but are doing nothing about it. We are urging people throughout the country to dial 0845 600 5555 and take RNID's simple hearing check. It takes just five minutes, and could be your first step on the road towards reconnecting yourself with friends, family and colleagues."

Recent Ipsos MORI research shows almost half of adults believe that embarrassment about not being able to hear prevents people with hearing difficulties discussing their problem with others, or having a hearing test.
