MSP welcomes Scottish medical aid for Gaza NGOs - help for vulnerable 'necessary and welcome'
Sunday, 11 January 2009

Sandra previously supporting a shipment of medical supplies to GazaSNP MSP Sandra White has welcomed an announcement by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, that the Scottish Government is willing to offer financial and medical aid to NGOs working in Gaza.

Writing in the Sunday Herald, Ms Sturgeon said: "The Scottish Government is ready to respond positively to bids for financial aid for Gaza from non-governmental organisations working in the field. The skills of our medical specialists are world-renowned, and we are also prepared to offer their expertise if it is deemed necessary."

Should the medical evacuation ('medevac') of casualties be possible, some of Scotland's hospitals may be able to receive patients needing specialist care.

The announcement came as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel is nearing the goals of its military campaign in the Gaza Strip but indicated the action would continue for the time being.

Commenting, Ms White said: "The approach of the Israeli military appears to be a collective punishment of all who live in Gaza there and is unacceptable.

"The ultimate answer to the Middle East crisis has to be a two-state solution – a secure and stable Israel alongside a peaceful and prosperous Palestinian state but the current military campaign is taking us further away from that goal, with further loss of life, and a further increase in the cycle of hatred and violence.

"Today’s indication that the conflict is set to continue makes the Scottish Government’s commitment to helping the vulnerable in Gaza all the more welcome and necessary.

"Israel must now declare a ceasefire and end the siege of Gaza to ensure this vital aid can reach the people who need it most."
