MSP welcomes 600 new jobs for Glasgow
Monday, 06 September 2010

Sandra White MSPWelcoming plans by Barclays to create up to 600 new jobs in Glasgow, city MSP Sandra White said: "Today's announcement is great news for Glasgow and Scotland as a whole and clear evidence that despite global financial uncertainty Scotland remains a world leader in attracting investment in its financial services industry.

"The Scottish Government is to be commended for doing everything within its power to ensure that highly skilled jobs are being created and retained, especially in the current economic climate.

“I am particularly encouraged that the Regional Assistance Grant being provided to Barclays will ensure that there will be lasting benefits for Glasgow, through meeting specific targets over the coming years.

"The stated commitment of  Ian Axe, Head of Operations, Barclays Capital and Barclays Wealth to turn its global Shared Services hub into a market-leading centre of excellence clearly demonstrates the confidence they have in Scotland's ability to lead the way in providing financial services and a clear commitment to building on the current expertise.

"However today's announcement also demonstrates the need for Scotland to have greater control over its economy for if we are to successfully build on this potential it is essential that we have the necessary powers to do so to ensure that Scotland's vast potential is fully realised."
