Labour's Glasgow job cuts leave campaign in chaos - Brown's jobs pledge branded worthless
Tuesday, 10 November 2009

The SNP today branded Labour’s decision to make 4000 council workers redundant a disgrace – coming only days after Gordon Brown promised “jobs for all” to people in Glasgow.

SNP MSPs also demanded that Labour guarantee they will follow the SNP’s policy of no compulsory redundancies.

Reports in today’s Herald state that Glasgow’s Labour council is set to make 4000 people redundant in a bid to cover up Labour’s financial mismanagement.  The news comes on the same day the SNP revealed that Labour have cut teaching posts in the city by 300 in the last 12 months.

SNP MSP Sandra White said: "At the very time people are concerned about their jobs, Labour in Glasgow are preparing to make thousands of people redundant.   Glasgow’s Labour leaders should hang their heads in shame.

"Whatever excuses they make there can be no doubting that it is Glasgow Labour letting thousands of jobs go.  They have mismanaged the council and mismanaged the economy.

"Only today we have seen that 300 teaching posts have been lost in the last 12 months.

"This is just another example of Labour’s hypocrisy.  Last week Gordon Brown came to Glasgow and promised jobs for all while his Labour party were drawing up plans to sack thousands.  Labour’s promises are simply worthless.

"Just like his transport minister lecturing the SNP on a 1 mile stretch of railway whilst planning to axe a 500 mile route direct to London.

"Labour’s campaign in Glasgow North East is in chaos as revelation after revelation exposes the truth that the only party ripping off this city is Labour.

"The SNP Government is committed to a policy of no compulsory redundancies – Labour must guarantee that they will follow the SNP’s lead and that no staff will be forced out of their jobs in the face of Labour’s recession."

Note:

Speaking in Glasgow on Friday Gordon Brown said: ""I want to see a situation where, not only do we give you new opportunities in education, but we create an economy where there are jobs for all."
