Glasgow SNP MSP Sandra White is writing to the BBC seeking assurances that there will be no job losses at the BBC in Glasgow following reports that the BBC is set to axe up to 3,000 jobs - at least 12% of its workforce and given the recent commitments by Mark Thomson to increase Scotland's low share of spending.
Commenting Mrs White said:
"The SNP believes Glasgow has real potential to be the hub of Scotland's media industry and these reports raise serious questions about their commitment to invest in Scottish broadcasting.
"These reported job losses at the BBC are staggering coming after the redundancy process which has already affected almost 4,000 staff.
"It would unacceptable for Glasgow and Scotland to lose any further share of the UK's output. Scotland only secures £38m of BBC output, and Mark Thomson should honour his commitment when he opened Pacific Quay to increase Scotland's share of output to 17% and grow our network share by 9% per year.
"I am therefore writing to the BBC seeking clarification on what these reports mean for Glasgow and BBC Scotland.
"This news just further confirms why the First Minister was right to set up the Broadcasting Commission to review all the issues concerning Broadcasting in Scotland."
