Highlighting the need to provide new and lasting leisure facilities for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Sandra White MSP for Glasgow today travels to London to take part in the Launch of one of the innovative multi-sport outdoor venues called 'adiZones' intended to get youngsters into sport and physical activity in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Ms White will join the Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales; members of the GB Paralympic team, including the six times paralympian Andy Blake and others involved in the promotion of the 2012 Games to inaugurate the new urban outdoor sport and gym arena which will include Basketball, Football, Tennis areas, climbing wall, outdoor gym and open area to encourage dance, aerobics and gymnastics and martial arts.
The attractive area, which was styled in the 2012 logo and will be open to all ages at all times, has been funded by the official sponsors of the Games Adidas and is intended to provide a lasting legacy in areas of London where current levels of participation in sport are amongst some of the lowest in the country.
Ms White said: "This model is one which I believe can be successfully replicated in Glasgow and I will be spending my time here aiming to achieve just that."
"Residents in Glasgow rightly cite Anti Social Behaviour as a concern but in the same breath admit that what's needed are places like these for young people to go to, I want to see this idea rolled out across Glasgow in the run up to the 2014 Games"
"Indeed earlier this year a similar gym was opened at Sandaig Park in the East End of Glasgow by Strathclyde police as part of their drive against gangs and Anti Social behaviour to provide youngsters with something to do and I am happy to say it's been a huge success for the whole community, young and old"
"I'd love to see George Square with an urban gym and sport area at its heart, imagine the message and image that would send out about Glasgow. We must go for gold in 2014 not only for the games themselves but for what lasting legacy we can give the communities of Glasgow." |
