Concerns over future of Kelvin Hall
Tuesday, 30 March 2010

Kelvin HallSandra White MSP has voiced her concerns over Glasgow City Council's proposals over the future of Glasgow's iconic Kelvin Hall.

The City Council's Executive Committee will consider a report on Thursday which includes options to use the building as a storage facility or to close it entirely.

In response Ms White has lodged a parliamentary motion to highlight the concerns over the building's future and to call for more community involvement in any decisions which are taken.

Speaking today she said: "These are very serious proposals which could have far reaching consequences for Kelvin Hall including the eventual closure of what I consider to be a great community asset"

"It troubles me that at a time when the Council should be doing everything it can to become more transparent in how it reaches decisions that these proposals should be rushed through like this"

"It is no secret that the Council have tried previously to bulldoze this building in order to sell it off to private developers and this is why I am very worried and sceptical as to what's behind these more recent proposals"

"Any changes to its current status must have the community at its heart and look to enhancing its community value rather than diminishing it."

Glasgow Kelvin Hall Under Threat
That the parliament notes with concern the proposals by Glasgow City Council for Glasgow's historic KelvinHall, which include options to use Kelvinhall as a storage facility or to close the building entirely; further notes that Glasgow City Council has in the past wished to develop the site for private housing despite strong community opposition; believes that any development of this iconic building must put the local community at its heart to strengthen and enhance its value to the community and hopes that in the course of considering its future Glasgow City Council  will realise its undeniable value as a great community asset.
