British Airways must end job flight
Wednesday, 08 October 2008

Glasgow AirportSupport for retaining the Glasgow cabin crew base in Glasgow gathered pace today with a number of MSPs expressing concerns over the relocation of the base to London.

First minister Alex Salmond has expressed his concern over possible job losses alongside newly appointed Scotland Secretary Jim Murphy, who has indicated that he will support the First Minister's stance.

Leaders of Unite have vowed to fight to keep the Scottish base and have accused British Airways of undermining the whole consultation process after the announcement was leaked. Leaders have also critisized the centralisation of services the south East of England echoing the concerns of the First Minister that BA is now becoming increasingly centred in London.

Commenting on the announcement Sandra White MSP for Glasgow said: "Many workers and Union officials are furious that they heard of these plans over the radio rather than being consulted first and BA and is clearly unacceptable.

"It seems that we are seeing more and more services being transferrred from Glasgow and in turn Scotland and this latest annoujncment foloows this trend.

"When BA Chief Exec Willie Walsh says "Serving Scotland is the DNA of British Airways." he's clearly not referring to Scottish Workers, is it not more the case that Scotland is the cash cow of BA.

"I will be speaking to the Unions and raising this issue in the Parliament  it is simply unacceptable to say that cabin crew employed at Glasgow will be given the opportunity to transfer to Heathrow, when many will have families and friends in and around Glasgow.

"Asking them to uproot their whole lives and move to London or face losing their jobs is disgraceful and I sincerely hope Mr Walsh will rethink this decision."
