£11m for redeveloping main cultural venues
Thursday, 06 October 2011

Sandra White MSPSandra White MSP for Glasgow Kelvin today welcomed the announcement of the Scottish Government to approve funding of £11m for the Scottish Opera and the Royal Scottish National Opera, two of Glasgow's most famous cultural venues.

The Scottish Opera will receive £4m which will be used to upgrade the Theatre Royal's front-of-house area as well as the disabled access.

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra will receive £7m which will be spent on an extension of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall including a new performance venue with 600 seats.

Commenting on the announcement Sandra White MSP for Glasgow Kelvin said: "This is excellent news and I very much welcome the funding allocation of the Scottish Government.

"The Scottish Opera and the Royal Scottish National Opera are two of Scotland's highest profile cultural venues and I am delighted that both will be able to redevelop and upgrade their establishments to an exceptional standard.

"The improvements are planned to be completed before the start of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and I am confident that both venues will contribute to the recognition of Glasgow not only as an excellent host for this international multi-sport event but also as a metropolis of culture."
