Sandra White MSP for the Glasgow Region has welcomed today's announcement that half a million pounds will be provided for repairs and to improve access at St Andrew's Cathedral in Glasgow.
The iconic building, which was originally built as a Roman Catholic Chapel and was the first to be built in Glasgow following the reformation is considered to be one of the finest examples of Neo Gothic architecture in Glasgow.
Commenting on the award Ms White said: "Glasgow has some of the finest architecture in the world and St Andrew's Cathedral with its central position and unique history is one of these jewels. This award will be well received and will further cement the Cathedral's position as a focal point for both worshippers and visitors to Glasgow alike.
"We must also remember that St Andrew's Cathedral is a treasure to the local community and one that during its construction brought together different faiths in what were troubled times. Despite opposition, which saw work completed during the day torn down by locals at night other faiths in the city donated money for the completion of the Chapel in a heart-warming gesture of ecumenism.
"This message of co-operation and empathy is one which I believe has the same resonance today and I hope that by returning the Cathedral to its original beauty those from all faiths will welcome its restoration and contribution to Glasgow"
