Deputy First Minister in fundraising run
Nicola Sturgeon, MSP for Govan, has opened up her local constituency office as a drop off point for relief supplies to aid the victims of the Pakistan floods.
Ms Sturgeon will also be running the 10k at this Sunday’s Great Scottish Run in Glasgow with members of Awaz FM - a community radio station in the city - in order to raise money for flood victims in Pakistan.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) are transporting aid boxes from Glasgow, and other UK destinations, for free to those in Pakistan who have been devastated by the recent floods.
Commenting, Ms Sturgeon said: "The current flood disaster in Pakistan has had a catastrophic affect on a country that was already facing multiple challenges. With over 1,600 dead and around 20 million displaced this is a humanitarian disaster on a gargantuan scale. Everyday new complications are being presented to the relief effort with potentially fatal water-borne diseases being the latest challenge to emerge.
"Aid organisations are in need of every type of assistance. I am delighted that PIA has agreed to transport boxes of aid for free to the victims of the flooding. My constituency office will be open to collect the following supplies for those affected by the flooding:
- New clothing and shoes
- Sanitary good including nappies
- Bottles of water
- Dried Milk
- Medical Kits and lifesaving drugs (unopened - please check use-by date)
- Anti-septic soap bars
- Tents
- Dry foodstuffs - such as biscuits, dates etc
"During the Tsunami and Haiti earthquake Scots were extremely generous in helping those who were in dire need. They have once again taken up the challenge and donated hundred of thousands to aid agencies in Scotland. I would urge them to continue donating what they can and together we can help rebuild lives in Pakistan."
Ms Sturgeon's constituency office will be open to collect goods from 9.30am - 5.30pm and is located at the following address:
213 Paisley Road West
Glasgow G51 1NE
