Sectarianism - we must abolish Act of Settlement
Tuesday, 12 December 2006
Speaking today (Tuesday) following the 'Sectarian Summit' held in Glasgow, the SNP's Depute Leader Nicola Sturgeon MSP called for politicians to commit to the repeal of the Act of Settlement, which discriminates against Roman Catholics, as part of the ongoing efforts to root out sectarian behaviour in Scotland.

Ms Sturgeon said:

"We must work in our communities, on our streets and in our football stadiums to combat the blight of sectarianism across our country, but we must also take a stance against the institutional discrimination which is contained in the Act of Settlement.  There is a clear cross-party and multi-faith consensus against this form of state sectarianism, and the Scottish Parliament has previously voted for its abolition.

"The First Minster should show the same commitment he has shown on the wider sectarianism issue and work to address this important matter now."
