McConnell complacent over drugs education
Thursday, 02 February 2006
SNP Holyrood Leader Nicola Sturgeon MSP today (Thursday) called on the First Minister to make dedicated funding available to improve teacher training on drugs awareness for schools.

During FMQ's today the First Minister consistently claimed that there was drugs education in every school in Scotland. He appeared to be unaware of the HMIe report, Tackling Drugs in Scotland (November 2004) which revealed:

"On the evidence of inspections, there were often still gaps in coverage and weaknesses in quality which restricted the impact of drug education."

Speaking after FMQ's, Ms Sturgeon said:

"Jack McConnell revealed that he is clearly not aware of the situation on the ground in schools across Scotland. A number of reports in recent years have highlighted the need for increased training on drugs awareness for teachers.

"The most recent HMIe report drew attention to the fact that there are gaps in coverage and weaknesses in the quality of drug education and it too called for improved training on drugs for teachers.

"The First Minister's complacency is wholly unjustified. He should get hold of the facts and make dedicated funding available to improve teacher training on drugs awareness for schools throughout Scotland."
