Carriers - clarity and commitment needed from Tories

Govan shipyardThe UK Government must give immediate clarity on the future of the two aircraft carriers being built on the Clyde and at Rosyth.

Following confirmation that BAE Systems have been asked to look at alternatives to constucting the two carriers Govan MSP Nicola Sturgeon said: "It is time the Tories gave us some clarity over the future of the carriers with a firm commitment to see these projects through.

"There are thousands of jobs at the best shipbuilders in the world currently reliant on this contract and the Ministry of Defence refusal to fully commit is causing great concern.

"Any sensible assessment by the Tories would show that these vessels are needed and the Clyde is the best place to build them.

"I will be writing again to the MoD and in contact with BAE to see what more can be done to make the case and secure these valuable jobs."
