Scottish Labour MPs fail to act for their constituents
Wednesday, 26 March 2008

Labour MPs in Scotland were today accused of failing to represent their constituents views by voting to thwart attempts to hold an independent inquiry into the Iraq war.

Whilst 12 English Labour MPs rebelled against the Government not one Scottish Labour MP joined them in forcing the government into holding an immediate inquiry.

Sandra White MSP for the Glasgow Region was particularly scathing of Glasgow's Labour MPs.

"The vast majority of people in Glasgow never wanted this war and now want the full facts to be known, for the people of Glasgow this is a betrayal.

"What really annoys people is the fact that the likes of John Robertson, Ann McKechin and particularly Mohammad Sarwar consistently espouse their Anti War feelings and never fail to remind us of the fact that back in 2003 they voted against the Government against the war.

"I don't think they'll be as public about this vote but the people who voted for them have a right to know.

"As this particular Volte Face comes hot on the heels of their failure to vote to stop the post office closures despite public announcements to the contrary people must be wondering if they have any credibility left.

"Just what are these people being paid to do."

Bashir Ahmad MSP added:

"It is extremely disappointing that after entering into war in Iraq five years ago on false premises that the British people will still be left with unanswered questions. Furthermore the UK Government remains unaccountable for what was at best a severe lack of judgement based on unsubstantiated intelligence.

"In addition, it is clear that some of our elected representative's including John Robertson's, Anne McKechin's and Mohammad Sarwar's, position on the war, has been truly exposed. To loudly espouse opposition to the war and then vote against a public inquiry is an insult to their constituent's intelligence and shows that their rhetoric rarely matches their actions.

"I am proud that our Scottish Government has consistently opposed the Iraq invasion and we will not stop our fight for those who led us into this illegal war are held to account."
