MSPs seek assurances over Tennent's Wellpark Brewery sale
Thursday, 27 August 2009
  • Wellpark Brewery signAnne McLaughlin MSP to seek meeting with Tennent's Brewery owners.

  • Bob Doris MSP to write to potential new owners C&C Group Plc.

Anne McLaughlin SNP MSP for Glasgow has written to the owners of the Tennent's brewery at Wellpark in the Dennistoun part of the city to seek an urgent meeting in order to gain reassurances for workers and for the famous Tennent's brand over the strategic decision of Anheuser-Busch InBev to sell the brand to C&C Group Plc.

Of the news of the proposed sale and her planned meeting with Tennent’s, Anne McLaughlin MSP said: "Tennent's is a successful brand that has its base in Dennistoun. Of course Unions will want to seek reassurances over pay and conditions of Tennent's workers that transfer to C&C Group Plc, and that the Wellpark site remains central to future production of the famous Tennent's brand.

"I intend to meet with Mike Kelly from Anheuser-Busch InBev as soon as possible to play my part in seeking such reassurances. The Tennent's brand has been built by the toil of its workers in Glasgow. They will, understandably, be anxious at the moment. However, I welcome the initial reassurances that have been given about the sale."

Her SNP colleague Bob Doris MSP, who has been active in attempting to keep Diageo's Port Dundas site open, is writing to expected new owners C&C Group Plc, the company behind the internationally successful Magner's brand.

Mr Doris will congratulate them on their forthcoming acquisition and encouraging them to develop further the image of Tennent's as a quality Scottish lager, brewed in Glasgow. In addition, Mr Doris will request that he and his colleague Anne McLaughlin MSP are able to meet with the new owners to gain essential reassurances about the Tennent’s brand.

Of the proposed sale Bob Doris MSP said: "There is a real opportunity here to take the Tennent's brand to the next level. Everyone knows the highly successful marketing strategy of C&C Group Plc in promoting Magner's as an internationally successful quality brand. C&C clearly value the 'Irishness' of their other product ranges and I very much hope they will equally value the unique selling point of this Glasgow lager and promote its ‘Scottishness’.

"This would be in stark contrast to Diageo who have yet to show ongoing loyalty to its workers at historic bases in Glasgow and Kilmarnock."
