MSP takes homecoming message to Sri Lanka
Tuesday, 04 August 2009

Anne McLaughlin MSPGlasgow MSP Anne McLaughlin will tomorrow (Wednesday 5th August) hand over a Saltire to the St Andrew's Hotel in Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka.

After her last trip to Sri Lanka Miss McLaughlin promised to return with a Saltire for the Scottish themed hotel.

Commenting Anne McLaughlin MSP said: "During my previous visit, in which I was engaged in relief work around the country, I was delighted to come across the St Andrew's Hotel in Sri Lanka. It is a fantastic establishment which promotes the best of Scotland, from golf to tartan; however, the one thing that was missing was a Saltire flag flying from its flagpole so I promised to bring one back.

"It will take a 6 hour drive to reach Nuwara Eliya from Colombo but I am delighted to have come back to the St Andrew's Hotel with the Saltire for their flag hoisting ceremony.

"Our culture is undoubtedly one of our strongest exports. People recognise our golf, tartan, whisky and shortbread all over the world.

"That is why the 'Year of Homecoming' is essential for our tourism industry. Just as we have Tartan Week in the USA hopefully we will, in time, be able to reach out to other countries, like Sri Lanka, across every continent."
