Glasgow SNP List MSPs support day care workers
Thursday, 08 November 2007

Glasgow SNP list MSPs Bob Doris, Sandra White, Bill Kidd and Bashir Ahmad have tabled a motion in the Parliament expressing concern for the future staffing and provision of learning disabled adults in Glasgow. This follows the strike by day care workers whose pay and conditions are under threat amidst a reorganisation of learning disabled services in the City.

Bob, Bill and Sandra all met with a delegation of Day Care workers and Unison officials at the Scottish Parliament today where they called for support.

Bob Doris MSP said: "The fact that striking workers have come to the Parliament today shows the level of concern that they have not just for their own future but for the quality of care provided to adults with learning disabilities within the city.

"I've met with care staff a number of times and also joined them on the picket lines.

"They just want to get back to work as quickly as possible. They also support a review to improve care service provision across the city but there seems to be a lack of confidence that Glasgow City Council will be able to provide a path out of pay detriment for workers salaries by March 2009.

"There is a suspicion that the ongoing review may affect the councils ability to fulfil the promise of lifting the salaries of workers out of detriment by that date.

"I urge the City Council and UNISON to get round the table and thrash this out."

Sandra White MSP said: "This dispute must be resolved as quickly as possible to ensure that equality and fairness in the workplace is replicated across the board.

"These workers care for some of the most vulnerable people in our society and do a sterling job.

"For the sake of  all involved I urge GCC to get together with the people involved and resolve this situation ASAP."

Bill Kidd MSP added: "All the day care workers are primarily seeking is for the Council to sit down and have meaningful discussions.

"The importance of the job they do is only appreciated when they aren't there.

"We need a speedy and satisfactory resolution for the benefit of staff, clients and carers alike."
