SNP MSPs in Glasgow hailed the results of this week's European Elections, which saw the SNP, for only the second time in its history, win a national election. In addition to securing the largest share of the national vote, the results showed an incredible breakthrough for the SNP in many Labour strongholds - including Glasgow.
Commenting on the significance of the victory Nicola Sturgeon, Deputy Leader of the SNP said: "Today's result has massive implications for the political landscape in Scotland. For the first time in our history the SNP has won a UK-wide election in Scotland.
"The people have given their verdicts on both the UK and Scottish Government, and while clearly abandoning Labour in their droves, voters have given the SNP-led Scottish Government a massive vote of confidence.
"In many areas around the country we have been victorious where previously it was unthinkable. In other Labour strongholds, such as Glasgow, we are breathing down the neck of the Labour Party as they are on the verge of collapse.
"If we analyse these results in a Westminster context then this makes fantastic reading for the SNP, and I imagine there will be some extremely nervous Labour MPs looking over their shoulder.
"While we are obviously delighted in the vote of confidence given to us, we will not become complacent and will continue to listen and work for the people of Scotland."
Anne McLaughlin, MSP for Glasgow and a key figure in last year's Glasgow East by-election victory also remarked: "In Glasgow we have witnessed a disintegration of the Labour vote which can only be read as a damning verdict on Glasgow City Council. For the SNP to come second in Glasgow by only 2% shows that we are the party listening to the real concerns of the people on the street.
"Glasgow City Council has correctly been punished for treating voters as an afterthought. They have been punished for ignoring parents, children and teachers whose schools have been closed down without adequate consultation.
"The results from ballot boxes around Glasgow make extremely worrying reading for elected officials within the Labour Party. Yesterday's result, if polled in a UK general election, would show the SNP taking the seat off Labour's Ann McKechin MP. Something tells me she will not be the only Labour Glasgow MP nervous about the increasing popularity of the SNP.
"Today's results show if a Government is willing to listen to the people then even mid-term it can, and will, increase its popularity. The Labour Party would do well to stop squabbling like ferrets in a sack and start doing the job they are paid to do."
Notes:
1. The electoral Calculus model would give the SNP the following seat in Glasgow:
- Glasgow North, seat of Ann McKechin (Labour); Minister of State at the Scotland Office
2. Glasgow result showed the Labour Party on 30% and SNP on 28% with the SNP winning the following local authority areas:
- Glasgow North
- Glasgow South
