Street Pastors logoSNP MSPs are joining some of those volunteering to help the vulnerable this festive period to witness first-hand the impact volunteers have and the work they do to support Scotland’s homeless people and those in need over the winter.

SNP MSP for Glasgow Cathcart James Dornan spent a night patrolling GIasgow city centre with the Street Pastors.

Lightburn HospitalYousaf welcomes Lightburn Hospital decision

Glasgow MSP Humza Yousaf has welcomed the Scottish Government's decision to keep Lightburn Hospital open. The proposal to close Lightburn Hospital was given Glasgow City Council approval earlier this year but has today been overturned by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon MSP.

Ms Sturgeon confirmed her decision in answer to a parliamentary question from Mr Yousaf stating: "I am rejecting NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde's proposal to transfer the inpatient and outpatient/day case services from Lightburn Hospital, and the request to close the facility; and have asked that the Board now works to maintain and improve the quality of the service delivered from the hospital, in the best interests of local people."

Sandra White and Humza Yousaf call for UKBA to halt harsh treatment of asylum seekers in Scotland

Two Glasgow MSPs have called on the UK Border Agency (UKBA) to stop their harsh treatment of asylum seekers following reports of dawn raids in Glasgow earlier this week.

There are reports that a mother and her five-year-old son were the latest victims of UKBA early morning raids.

MSPs express concern over University of Strathclyde's proposed cuts

University of StrathclydeNewly elected constituency MSPs Bill Kidd for Glasgow Anniesland and Sandra White for Glasgow Kelvin have expressed concerns over the impact of proposed cuts at Strathclyde University as students and lecturers rally on campus.

The University has put forward proposals for a phased withdrawal from a number of courses such as music, sociology, geography and community education.

Glasgow MSPs rally behind nurses

Graham Revie - Board Member RCN, Anne McLaughlin MSP and Bob Doris MSPGlasgow SNP MSPs Bob Doris and Anne McLaughlin have signed a pledge of support to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). The RCN have stepped up the Nursing Scotland's Future campaign, enlisting support from candidates standing at the Holyrood election in May. RCN Scotland's campaign has already received over 1,700 supporters. RCN members want MSPs to listen to their views on making the health service in Scotland better in the new parliamentary session.

MSP for Glasgow, Anne McLaughlin, is the Scottish National Party candidate for Glasgow Provan. She said: "As the daughter of two nurses I am very well aware of the demands on nurses and of the determination of the nursing profession to do the very best for their patients. Therefore I am delighted to support the RCN with this campaign."

Kinship care climbs political agenda

grandmother with childMSPs of all parties have signalled their appreciation of and support for kinship carers in a debate at Holyrood (Thursday 16 Dec). Kinship carers look after young relatives whose parents are incapacitated for a number of reasons, including disability, mental health and addiction. Long-standing kinship care campaigner Bob Doris MSP and fellow Glasgow MSP Sandra White have welcomed the increase in support amongst parliamentary colleagues.

Bob and Anne sign the pledgeGlasgow SNP MSPs Anne McLaughlin and Bob Doris have signed the global Parkinson’s pledge this week, alongside celebrities such as Graham Norton, Gary Lineker and Twiggy. The pledge will be the lasting legacy of the second ever World Parkinson Congress (WPC) being held in Glasgow.
