Glasgow City Council must spend wisely and deliver for local people
Thursday, 09 February 2012

James DornanGlasgow Cathcart MSP, James Dornan, has today welcomed The Scottish Government's 11.5 billion pounds for local councils across Scotland.

On the day that Glasgow City Council will set its budget for the next financial year, James Dornan has urged Labour to "spend its money wisely and deliver for the people of Glasgow."

Mr Dornan said: "Councils across Scotland receive the second largest chunk of the Scottish Government's entire budget, second only to the NHS.

"The Scottish Government have announced details of funding for councils to keep the council tax frozen, maintain police and teacher numbers and continue to improve adult social care, and Glasgow receives almost five hundred pounds per capita higher than the Scottish Average.

"The challenge now for Labour in Glasgow City Council is to use this money wisely and deliver on these key priorities.

"The people of Glasgow are tired of hearing their local council spend thousands of pounds on unnecessary extravagances, such as a portrait of the Lord Provost worth thousands of pounds and gold medals for the city Baillies, as well as huge payouts to Senior Council Officers and scandalous payoffs for ALEO bosses from the wider 'Council Family'.

"My surgeries are filled with people coming to see me because their care packages for their family have been cut, or their charges unjustly increased; because their streets and communities are riddled with pot holes; or because Glasgow City Council are cutting ASL provision in my constituency.

"It is time for Glasgow's Labour administration to get its priorities right and start spending our council tax money on the needs of our citizens instead of these vanity projects.

"The SNP Government have provided Glasgow with the finance, the challenge now for Glasgow City Council is to set a budget that delivers on the people's priorities and if they fail to do so then they will pay the price at the ballot box in May."
