Say no to domestic violence this festive season
Thursday, 09 December 2010

Bob Doris MSP has applauded efforts by campaigners at Scottish Women’s Aid for their campaign 'Domestic abuse. Together we can stop it' which runs from 25 November to 10 December, which is highlighting the plight of victims of domestic abuse.

The SNP MSP for Glasgow said: “I am continually appalled that domestic violence still affects so many women in Scotland.  There is a clear link between alcohol consumption and violence against women and children and it is imperative that we are all aware of the anticipated rise in incidents during the festive period.

“I would urge everyone who has internet access to sign the Women’s Aid Pledge at www.togetherwecanstopit.org.

“Violent men are a small minority. I am also supporting the White Ribbon Scotland campaign which aims to better engage men in Scotland in tackling violence against women.

“Domestic violence has no place in our society and we must all be prepared to tackle it by challenging ignorance and finding support for those we suspect of suffering. Around 50,000 domestic violence incidents are reported to police in Scotland every year but the ones that go unreported are of enormous concern. This issue is a public problem and we need to raise awareness to make sure that people report suspected domestic violence to the relevant authorities.”
