SNP MSP welcomes Glasgow's success as UNESCO City of Music
Wednesday, 20 August 2008

The Big Day festival, 1990Glasgow SNP MSP Bob Doris has welcomed news that Glasgow has been successful in its bid to join UNESCO's worldwide Creative Cities Network as a City of Music. The accolade means that Scotland has become the only nation in the world with two UNESCO 'Creative Cities', as Glasgow joins Edinburgh which was awarded City of Literature in 2004.

Commenting Mr Doris said: "This is a great boost for Glasgow coming hot on the heels of winning the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"UNESCO's recognition of Glasgow is a fitting tribute to the creativity and vibrancy of Glasgow and Glaswegians. Congratulations should go to all those that were involved in securing this award.

"This is also a wonderful opportunity for Glasgow to build on this achievement. UNESCO established the creative cities network partly to encourage 'creative tourism' and I look forward to many more visitors to our great city.

"My first brush with Glasgow and music was the Big Day Music Festival in 1990 - a free event.

"Perhaps now 18 years on it is time to celebrate such an award by holding a similar event again."
