SNP MSP backs foster and kinship care strategy
Tuesday, 04 December 2007

Scottish National Party MSP Bob Doris today welcomed the announcement by Adam Ingram, Minister for Children and Early Years of a new strategy for fostering and kinship care including the announcement that Kinship carers will receive the same level of funding as Foster carers.

The announcement from Mr Ingram came in a parliamentary answer to Bob Doris, MSP for Glasgow.

Commenting on the news Bob Doris said: "I am proud that the SNP government, in conjunction with Scotland's local authorities is taking this step to support kinship carers with funding of between £119 and £198 a week.

"The exclusion of kinship carers from full funding for many years, including throughout the last administration has left over 2000 grandparents, aunts, uncles and other relatives facing potential financial hardship in order to provide a safe and secure environment for young people at risk.

"I am pleased to see the Scottish Government and COSLA taking early action to address this issue.

"The strategy provides not only better training support and advice but a clear focus for Government and local authorities on the needs of those in care and those providing the care."
