Property factors to raise their game
Friday, 15 May 2009

Glasgow MSP Bob Doris has today welcomed a Scottish Government initiative to sideline rogue property factors, a move which has been backed by evidence from the Office of Fair Trading. The voluntary accreditation scheme will build on the OFT's recommendations to give house owners peace of mind when choosing a property manager.

It is being developed with the support of an industry-led accreditation body and is made up of representatives from a wide spectrum of housing interests, including consumers.

Mr Doris commented: "For too long, rogue property factors have wreaked havoc across Glasgow. Constituents have often complained to me of the poor quality of service they receive from these firms. It can be infuriating when I simply don't have the clout to help constituents as I would like to.

"We need to recognise good property management practice when we see it and get rid of the rogue element. Companies that rip off customers with shoddy service will lose their accreditation, and tough new laws will be implemented if there is not a dramatic improvement across the sector.

“I would encourage all local housing associations as well as the Glasgow Housing Association to sign up to the scheme early and lead the way for the property management sector.

"This development from the SNP government is a giant step in the right direction."

Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said:

"This Government is determined that there will be no hiding place for cowboy property managers who make money from poor standards and poor service.

"The OFT report highlights a substantial level of satisfaction with property manager services in Scotland.

"I am pleased to see that the OFT recommends just the type of voluntary, industry-led accreditation scheme that we are committed to."
