Nine new international flights for city
Bob Doris MSP has today spoken of an "exciting future" for Glasgow Airport as airline Jet2.com get set to launch a series of new direct international flights from Glasgow, with the creation of 150 jobs.
Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson was at Glasgow Airport on Tuesday (14 Sept) to announce funding of £150,000 from Scottish Enterprise's Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) scheme towards the creation of nine maintenance jobs at the new Jet2.com base. Glasgow SNP MSP Bob Doris has described the decision by Jet2.com to create the new base as a "major coup for Glasgow and a vote of confidence in the local workforce" as the city beat off rival competition from across the UK.
Scottish Development International has been working with Jet2.com to establish the base, with Jet2.com set to launch flights to nine destinations from Glasgow - Nice, Alicante, Dalaman, Faro, Monastir, Palma, Paphos, Sharm el Sheikh and Tenerife.
Mr Doris said: "This is terrific news for the city. RSA funding is designed to create economic stimulus in the local economy and this new airline base demonstrates exactly the sort of high-value job creation that RSA should be used for.
"The aviation sector in Scotland has struggled during this recession and the creation of these highly skilled jobs will be welcome news indeed to those working in the sector as well as being great news for the economy of the West of Scotland in these uncertain times.."
SNP Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson MSP said: "This announcement is a tremendous boost for Glasgow Airport, linking the city to new destinations and creating 150 jobs. I am particularly pleased that Scottish Enterprise has been able to offer RSA towards the creation of high-value maintenance jobs. This follows the excellent work of Scottish Development International in persuading Jet2.com to establish these new jobs in Glasgow in the face of competition from other parts of the UK.
"As we look to sustain economic recovery and build Scotland's economy for long-term success, it is vital to use job creation tools such as RSA to their full potential."
Note:
Bob Doris MSP has today lodged the following Parliamentary motion:
S3M-07011: RSA Investment Boost for Scottish Aviation
That the Parliament welcomes the announcement by the airline, Jet2.com, that it will be establishing a base in Glasgow, which will result in the creation of around 150 jobs and introduce nine new direct international flights to Glasgow Airport; believes that the £150,000 grant that was awarded from Scottish Enterprise's Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) scheme to help with the creation of what it considers to be high-value maintenance jobs at the base demonstrates a sensible use of public funds, and anticipates benefits in the years ahead for the area's economy and for Glasgow Airport as a result of this RSA investment.
