MSP calls for BAA to act fast over Glasgow Airport
Wednesday, 20 July 2011

Glasgow AirportThe Competition Commission has instructed the British Airports Authority (BAA) to sell off either Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport after a long-running legal wrangle over the future of the airports. BAA owns three major Scottish airports - Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Speaking in Glasgow today, SNP MSP for Glasgow Bob Doris said: "I welcome the fact that there has at long last been a decision and that action must now be taken to sell off either Glasgow or Edinburgh airport. It's not in the interests of passengers or of the cities the airports serve that the future of the airports hang in the balance any longer.

"Glasgow is a terrific destination for a whole host of reason and we need to make sure there is investor confidence in our city's main air hub to maximise direct flights into the city. I have no doubt that investment in Glasgow Airport has suffered as a result of uncertainty in recent years.

"I welcome the fact that today we have a decision on which BAA must now act. I call on BAA to act swiftly to resolve this matter and to return long-term confidence to these vital Scottish airports."

"Planned investment in Glasgow Airport should not be put on hold should BAA plan a challenge to the decision. Should BAA decide to sell Glasgow rather than Edinburgh Airport the new owners must commit to investment and to pursue more direct flights to serve both our business and tourist needs."
