Labour needs to rethink Independence opposition, says Doris
Tuesday, 11 May 2010
Bob Doris MSPFollowing last Thursday’s UK General Election results which saw the Tories comprehensively rejected both in Glasgow and across Scotland, SNP MSP for Glasgow Bob Doris has said that a 'Rainbow Coalition' to block David Cameron becoming PM would now be the best of a bad situation.

Describing the result in Scotland as 'a victory for fear over hope', Mr Doris added: "Scottish voters lent Labour their vote en masse because they were terrified of a Tory Government. "The SNP cautioned that voting Labour in Scotland out of fear of the Tories was a dangerous gamble and that Scotland would still be likely to wake up to a Tory government.

"In these circumstances voters know the SNP are best placed to defend Scotland's interests, difficult though that may be.

"Alex Salmond has already made it clear that the SNP are prepared to put party differences to one side for the benefit of Scotland. The SNP is prepared to discuss options with the Labour Party in order to avert a Tory Government and to secure concessions for Scotland in the coming Westminster parliamentary term.

"Labour must show the same maturity and recognise that this election result is not an endorsement of Labour's record in Scotland, but fear of a Tory government.

"Only Scottish Independence will defend us from Tory rule in Scotland for good. Labour members in Scotland should now re-think their dogmatic opposition to Independence and the SNP's proposal for a democratic referendum on the constitution.

"Scottish Liberal Democrat MPs should also be reminded that if they usher in a Tory government they will be finished as an electoral force in Scotland."
